Did you know that Akira Toriyama (the mangaka / creator of Dragon Ball) gave dragon ball’s characters name, particularly their original Japanese name, from a pun on regular words, often the names of various foods?
Saiyans itself is taken from Japanese word “Yasai” which means vegetable therefore the characters which are included in Saiyan tribe had been named from various vegetables. For examples Kakarot (Goku’s real name on the Saiyan’s planet) is taken from the word “carrot” and Vegeta, the prince of the Saiyans is derived from "vegetables".
